March 26th, 2007 – a day that will live on in obscurity! I have finally got around to uploading the online part of WordMap, yet another fairly silly project I have been tinkering with.
WordMap is a large-ish database of words that are joined with other words to form a graph (this is a technical term in Computer Science, nothing to do with line or pie graphs). I use some custom Python scripts that allow me to do some searches through this data, but I have not included this functionality in the web version. Instead, you get to crawl around the English language, hopping from word to word like a toad hopping across a lily pad covered pond.
“What is the point?” I hear your cry echoing from here. “Well, it’s better than just sitting there reading random blogs!” is one response. A less snarky response is that the current iteration of WordMap is just a stepping stone (or lily pad, if you prefer) to a larger idea I had a while ago. In any case, some people may find it useful/interesting/slightly fun as is.
Anyway, there are slightly more details at the WordMap project page, which you should immediately check out.
It’s still early days, and I have not even settled on exactly how it will finally look. Feel free to weigh in with questions and comments
