I think the thing I had the most problem with was the premise that Tony Stark was suffering from post-traumatic stress. Although this gives the film a tidy character arc, Tony Stark doesn't strike me as a man who would let events get on top of him like that.

I really liked the film, but there were some things that bothered me. The kid was a decent actor, but it was the whole situation built around that character that felt tacked on, forced, and "un-real". The ending (mostly the Iron suit "fireworks") seemed manipulative and fake-emotional. And is it bad of me that I wasn't that impressed with Pepper Potts empowerment moment (mostly because I saw it coming a mile away). Also - if Guy Pierce had his army of near-immortals, why did he need the Mandarin? It makes no sense. You don't need anonymity to survive and get rich if you can literally breath fire!

Other than those gripes, I found the movie quite entertaining and amusing. I'd give it a B-.

I forgot about the Hulk, he was great. But I would argue that The Avengers would have been OK without him, but the film would have been nothing without Iron Man.

I can confirm that shit blows up.

Tony Stark was the second best thing about The Avengers. The best thing was large, green and, I seem to remember, unimpressed by puny gods. Tony Start was a pretty good runner up though.

Thanks for the review - my wife will probably still want to go, as her primary criteria for films is "does shit blow up?"

As I recall the film sort of cheats by showing us Julia being placed in the life pod with the bomb. Jack flies up to the Tet carrying a life pod which we assume is the same one. But later Julia is shown getting out of the pod near the house (correct me if I am wrong here), while the life pod Jack is carrying contains Beech. So where did the other pod come from, since all the others were destroyed? Also, it was pretty mean to abandon Julia alone in a hidden valley away from the rest of humanity. It didn't even seem the Jack told anyone where she was.

One thing I did really like was the subtle ways we see that Victoria was probably quite happy with her life under the Tet. She had Jack, which was what she wanted.

Hi I enjoyed Oblivion, mainly because the writer/director was trying to tell a story rather than regal us with special effects. Not sure about your plot holes. The house he built was in a zone that was off grid - it wasn't much of a house either, its basic structure could have been there, like the chimney. It was explained at one stage that he regularly went off grid. What happened to the other clones is something for us all to speculate on - not a plot hole. The other life pod? Don't understand. I thought they only every used one. One to transport her back to his house, then that same one to transport Morgan Freeman up to the machine, or should it have been destroyed when the house was attacked by the AI? I will have to watch it again. One thing that did worry me though was near the end where they were showing how Cruise's character came into contact with the alien machine. I got the impression that some sort of tractor beam was pulling his ship into the alien machine, which caused him to jettison the rest of the crew, but why was that section of the hull not pulled in too?
